Morning Sickness: Handy snacks to help alleviate

This past week I caught up with my friend who is pregnant with her third.  I think back to my pregnancy when the nausea kicked in at six weeks.  The first day hit me like a freight train, the night before I was supposed to give a talk to a room of 200 people. Gingersnaps and saltines in my purse helped me get through it.

Hunger and an empty stomach causes low blood sugar levels which may spark nausea, so its best to keep something in your stomach at all times.  Here are some handy snacks that I kept in my purse and glove compartment, or grabbed as I ran out the door that helped me get through the first trimester nausea.

For your purse

  • Clif Kid Organic Z Bar – I really like the smaller portion size offered in their line for kids.  Love the Smores flavor.
  • Clif Kid Organic Twisted Fruit – I craved fruit flavors over chocolate in that first trimester
  • Prunes – gives you that fiber you need to keep things moving!
  • Dried apricots
  • S7 Prenatal vitamin drink mix - I can only WISH this was out already in my first trimester, but will be good for the second time around.  These packets contain ginger and extra vitamin B6 for nausea, plus the electrolytes you crave that help with hydration.  Just add to your water or 100% juice.
  • Gingersnaps – studies show how ginger consumed 3 times per day helps alleviate nausea
  • Soda crackers, like Saltines – they almost melt in your mouth.  I kept them next to my bed so I could nibble on them during the middle of the night or morning when I woke up sick.

For grabbing and going

  • Apples – get the small ones and wash them before you head out the door
  • Mozzarella string cheese sticks, individually wrapped
  • Light, Swiss cheese, pre-sliced
  • Kefir smoothie, fruit flavored (ready made) - just pour and go
  • Water – sip on cold water through out the day to stay hydrated
  • Toast, made from white bread, topped with soft spread
  • Sports drinks - good for sipping, and are a good source of electrolytes
