Prenatal Anti-Nausea Cocktail
If you tried my anti-nausea tips, including ginger, vitamin B6, and switching your prenatal vitamin, from my last blog and you still aren’t feeling much better, it may be time to consider some medications under the advice and care of your obstetrician. Don’t be like my friend, who suffered through it for a month, and then finally begged her doctor for some meds. She lost weight in the process (during the pregnancy) – not ideal!
Please note: I am not giving you medical advice here, but rather, telling you what worked for me so you know what to ask for. Be persistent with your doc and let them know how bad it is. You are not bothering them. IT’S THEIR JOB.
Unisom is an over-the-counter sleeping pill that helps, and my obstetrician advised taking half a pill twice daily. Since it made me a little sleepy (the last thing I needed during that first trimester!), I took it only at night. In the early afternoon before the second hit of nausea kicked in, I took the generic version of Zofran.
Zofran is a wonder drug they actually give to cancer patients with nausea, and it is also safe for most pregnant women. The only problem with this medication is that it can make you constipated! For that, eat prunes and the twig-looking bran cereal and drink a little shot of coffee (if OK’d by your doctor). I found this routine to be a good anti-nausea “cocktail”, along with the ginger and B6. I was able to get through the day with feeling like I would not puke my brains out on live television, and I could eat a wider variety of foods. Still no broccoli though. Baby steps!
Any other anti-nausea tricks I haven’t mentioned?
